Can you use Minky fabric for a quilt?
We love the feel of Minky fabrics. They are so cuddly, warm, and perfect for snuggling! It’s a wonderful fabric for quilts, but we frequently hear, “If only it were easier to sew with!” Never fear, there are ways to make sewing with Minky fabrics less of a challenge.
Does Minky fabric fray?
Minky doesn’t fray, so you don’t have to finish the raw edges. However, raw edges do tend to “curl”. If the curl is bothering you, finish the edges with a zig-zag stitch, an overcast stitch, or even with a serger. If you use a serger, you’ll have to deep clean your machine once your project is finished.

Does Minky fabric need to be prewashed?

Minky does not shrink, so if you are pairing it with cotton (like in this tutorial), make sure to pre-wash the cotton first.
How do you wash a Minky backing quilt?
If it’s all minky, it’s best to wash on gentle with cool water in the washing machine, then remove and throw it in the dryer on low heat. Dry on low heat for about 10 minutes, then pull it out to hang dry.
How do you keep Minky from shedding?
Minky’s do have a tendency to shed, and you don’t want to encourage it by doing a big load of washing all at once. When machine washing your Minky Mama’s blanket, it is best to use traditional liquid laundry detergent; avoid using pod detergent.
How do you make my Minky soft again?
Wash on the cold-delicate cycle or hand wash in cold water. Hang dry or use a no-heat setting on the dryer. If you don’t want to risk using detergent, use ¼ cup baking soda and ⅓ cup white vinegar when washing.
